The GTO’s narration

You are a group of persons as many as you are, cycling toward the district exam centre, when you halt at Village Palem. You have two bicycles, a tractor-trailer at the market (driver will help if asked), rope and buckets at the Palem well, and a shop phone at the market that can dial 108 and 100. As you reached Palem, people shouted from the canal ghat that a boy is clinging to a banana stem about 15 metres out; the current is moderate. At the same moment smoke rose from two thatched huts between Palem and the market; an elderly woman may still be inside. A shopkeeper at the market said two men snatched his motorcycle and rode toward the police-post road. Two of you hold hall tickets for a state examination at Town Hall; the gates close at 10:00 hrs. You are not trained divers. The tractor cannot go down the canal bund. Now the time is 08:50 hrs. As brave young men/lady what will you do.

This is one workable plan, not the only plan. The GTO wants a split group, life before duty, and no invented resources. Compare after you write.

Priority of problems

  1. 1. Life — boy in the canal at the ghat (G).
  2. 2. Life — hut fire and possible trapped woman (F).
  3. 3. Property — snatched motorcycle (inform police, do not chase) (M).
  4. 4. Duty — two examinees at Town Hall by 10:00 (T).

Distance and time (from the map)

  • Palem → ghat: 1 km kaccha ≈ 4 min on foot / cycle.
  • Palem → market: 3 km pucca ≈ 8 min cycle, tractor 25 km/h ≈ 7 min.
  • Market → hut fire: 2 km kaccha.
  • Market → police post: 4 km pucca.
  • Market → Town Hall: 5 km pucca ≈ 15–20 min on cycle.

What the group actually does

  1. Party A (3 + well rope) run to the ghat at 08:51. Human chain / throw line — no hero dive. One of them later cycles to the market phone for 108 if the boy is not out in five minutes.
  2. Party B (3) take buckets; collect the tractor at the market and water the huts. Check the elderly woman first, then the fire.
  3. Party C (1) at the shop phone dials 100, gives bike number and direction toward the police post. No vigilante chase.
  4. Party D (the 2 examinees) leave on the two bicycles via market → Town Hall at 08:55 (5 km, arrive ~09:15). They do not wait for the emergencies to finish.
  5. Tractor after the fire ferries the rest toward Town Hall. RV at Town Hall after 10:00.

Close: Canal and fire are simultaneous life problems — six people on those two, police informed by phone, examinees cycle out at once. Nobody dives, nobody chases thieves.
