SSB GTO Tasks Guide — All 9 Tasks Explained

The Group Testing Officer (GTO) stage of the SSB spans Day 3 and Day 4, and is where the assessors watch you interact with your peers in progressively harder task settings. Nine distinct tasks are used — Group Discussion, Group Planning Exercise, Progressive Group Task, Half Group Task, Individual Obstacles, Command Task, Snake Race, Final Group Task and Lecturette. Each one measures a specific subset of the 15 Officer Like Qualities (OLQs). How the 2-day GTO ground actually flows

A typical GTO schedule at any SSB centre runs as follows. Exact ordering varies slightly by centre, but the 9 tasks below are always present in some sequence:

  1. Day 3 morning — Group Discussion (2 topics × 20 min) and Group Planning Exercise (~45 min).
  2. Day 3 afternoon — Progressive Group Task (~40 min) and Half Group Task (~15 min).
  3. Day 4 morning — Individual Obstacles (3 min per candidate), Command Task (~8–10 min per candidate) and Lecturette (~3 min per candidate).
  4. Day 4 afternoon — Snake Race / Group Obstacle Race and Final Group Task.

Fifteen OLQs are scored across the GTO stage — Effective Intelligence, Reasoning, Organising Ability, Power of Expression, Ability to Influence, Cooperation, Initiative, Speed of Decision, Self-Confidence, Determination, Courage, Stamina, Team Spirit, Liveliness and Sense of Responsibility. No single task tests all fifteen; the combined 9-task battery does.

Group Discussion (GD)

Two 20-minute discussions on the GTO ground. Learn the six-move framework, common topic types, and the mistakes that cost 4 OLQs at once.

Group Planning Exercise (GPE)

A 3D model, a printed story, 3–4 simultaneous problems, and 30 minutes to plan alone then convince the group. The most planning-heavy task on the GTO ground.

Progressive Group Task (PGT)

Four progressively harder obstacles, a load to carry, and a set of helping materials — planks, ropes, tolvi, drum. The task that separates thinkers from doers.

Half Group Task (HGT)

Half the group, one obstacle, same colour rules. The GTO's way of surfacing the quieter candidates before scoring closes.

Individual Obstacles (IO)

Ten physical obstacles worth 1 to 10 marks each. Three minutes on the clock. The most physical, most measurable task on the GTO ground.

Command Task (CT)

Everyone becomes commander for one obstacle, picks 2–3 subordinates and delivers a briefed plan. Your one clean shot at showing leadership in isolation.

Snake Race / GOR

Two teams race across obstacles carrying a rolled tent (the "snake"). Adrenaline, chanting, sweat, and the only GTO task with an explicit winner.

Lecturette

Pick 1 of 4 chit topics. Prepare for 3 minutes. Speak for 3 minutes. The only GTO task where the audience is another 12 candidates staring at you.
