Indian Army SSB Personal Interview — Questions, Facts & Preparation (2026)
If Army is your first preference on the PIQ, the Interviewing Officer will spend a disproportionate share of the PI testing whether your motivation is genuine and whether you understand what Army life actually involves — field postings, regimental ethos, counter-insurgency exposure and the chain of command. This guide lists the most common Army-specific PI questions and the factual depth expected at NDA, CDS, TES and OTA entries.
Core motivation questions
Every Army PI opens with why the Army — not “defence forces” generically.
- Why Army and not Navy or Air Force? — cite terrain, regimental life, ground leadership, not “Army is easier”.
- Why not IPS/IAS if you are a graduate? — honest career comparison; Army offers command early.
- Which arm would you prefer (Infantry, Artillery, Engineers, Signals)? — know one fact per arm.
- Are you ready for field postings and counter-insurgency areas? — realistic yes with family awareness.
Organisation & ranks you must know
The IO expects baseline military literacy — not encyclopaedic detail.
- Ranks: Lt → Capt → Maj → Lt Col → Col → Brig → Maj Gen → Lt Gen → Gen → Field Marshal.
- Commands: Western, Eastern, Southern, Northern, Central, South Western, Army Training Command.
- Key institutions: IMA Dehradun, OTA Chennai, NDA Khadakwasla, NCC role in your background.
- Recent ops context (name at least one): e.g. UN missions, border deployment themes — verify current facts before SSB.
Weapons & equipment (entry-level depth)
You are not expected to be a gunner — but blank answers hurt.
- Infantry: INSAS/FAMAS lineage, basic rifle sections — know what your NCC unit used if applicable.
- Artillery: difference between guns, howitzers and mortars at concept level.
- Armour: tank regiments — name one Indian tank you follow in news (Arjun, T-90 etc.).
- If technical entry (TES/TGC): corps of Engineers, Signals, EME — match to your engineering branch.
PIQ cross-checks common in Army boards
Anything on your PIQ is fair game — Army boards often probe sports and NCC harder.
- Sports achievements → rules, positions, last tournament you played.
- NCC “A” certificate → camp location, weapon trained on, social service project.
- Positions of responsibility → specific incident where you led under pressure.
- Siblings in forces → relationship, rank, how much you actually interacted.
Frequently asked questions
What if my first preference is Army but I am medically borderline for Infantry?
Answer honestly. Mention your preference order and that you understand medical categorization may allocate another arm. IOs respect realism over stubborn “only Infantry” answers when medical facts say otherwise.
Should I memorise all Army regiments?
No — know 3–4 regiments you genuinely admire and one fact each (motto, theatre, famous action). Memorising lists without understanding fails under cross-questioning.
How is Army PI different from Navy or Air Force PI?
Same OLQ rubric, but Army IOs probe field life, CI/CT awareness, regimental history and ground leadership examples more deeply. Navy asks sea motivation; Air Force asks aviation and aircraft.
