Assam Bund — Snake Bite & School Cut-off — SSB GPE Practice

SSB Group Planning Exercise (GPE) illustration — candidates studying a schematic map and writing a 10-minute group plan around a GTO table.

The map

Same idea as the printed sketch on the GTO table. Gold = pucca, dashed = kaccha, blue = water, pine clumps = village. Read kilometres before you divide the group.

The GTO’s narration

You are a group of persons as many as you are, NCC cadets at a relief hut on a Brahmaputra bund. Water is rising. You have two country boats (six persons each, pole, no engine), a first-aid kit with antihistamine only (no anti-snake venom), four life-rings and a police wireless at the chowk. A farm worker at the broken bamboo bridge was bitten by a snake fifteen minutes ago; the limb is swelling. Twenty-eight children are marooned on the school mound; the bamboo planks are gone. If the dam siren means extra release at 12:30 the hut floor will flood and stores must move to the chowk. The wireless at the chowk is the only way to ask the PHC for ASV and a motorboat. Do not cut or suck the bite. Boats cannot take more than six. Be off the hut by 12:15. Now the time is 11:00 hrs. As brave young men/lady what will you do.

10 minutes — write your plan on paper

Start the clock, look at the map, write priorities, who goes where, and clock times. Nothing is typed on this page.

A complete GPE solution (for comparison)

This is one workable plan, not the only plan. The GTO wants a split group, life before duty, and no invented resources. Compare after you write.

Priority of problems

  1. 1. Life — snake bite at the broken bridge; needs PHC / ASV (BB).
  2. 2. Life — 28 children on the school island (SC).
  3. 3. Duty — wireless to district from the chowk (Ch).
  4. 4. Property — shift hut stores before 12:15 (R).

Distance and time (from the map)

  • Hut → broken bridge: 2 km kaccha / boat along the bund.
  • Bridge → school mound: 1 km across water.
  • Bridge → PHC: 4 km pucca on the far bank.
  • Hut → chowk: 5 km pucca.

What the group actually does

  1. Boat-1 (3 cadets) to the bridge at 11:02. Immobilise the limb, no tourniquet drama, straight to PHC. Do not wait for ASV at the hut.
  2. One cadet runs/cycles the bund to the chowk wireless — request ASV, a motorboat, and if possible no extra release.
  3. Boat-2 shuttles children school → bund → hut/chowk. Two cadets stay as loaders. Children first, never more than six.
  4. After the first child wave, the remaining cadet starts shifting dry rations toward the chowk. Hut empty by 12:15.

Close: Bite goes to PHC in the first boat. Children are a shuttle, not one heroic overload. Wireless buys ASV and a motorboat. Stores move last.
