Leh Axis — AMS & Fuel Drum — SSB GPE Practice

SSB Group Planning Exercise (GPE) illustration — candidates studying a schematic map and writing a 10-minute group plan around a GTO table.

The map

Same idea as the printed sketch on the GTO table. Gold = pucca, dashed = kaccha, blue = water, pine clumps = village. Read kilometres before you divide the group.

The GTO’s narration

You are a group of persons as many as you are, civilians in a Tempo Traveller crossing a 4,800-metre pass on the Leh axis. At 10:05 a passenger slurred speech and showed ataxia. You have a portable oxygen cylinder good for 15 minutes, one mask, 10 litres extra diesel, sand, three sleeping bags and a satellite phone with 8 minutes of battery. A jerry can on the roof has split; diesel is dripping toward the exhaust. Earlier a truck smashed the culvert ahead; an Army column is due on this one-lane at 11:00 and cannot pass without a warning. You must not become an obstacle on a military axis. Descent is the treatment for AMS — do not climb to the crest with the casualty. Kill the engine before dealing with the leak. Satphone: one short call, then conserve. Now the time is 10:10 hrs. As brave young men/lady what will you do.

10 minutes — write your plan on paper

Start the clock, look at the map, write priorities, who goes where, and clock times. Nothing is typed on this page.

A complete GPE solution (for comparison)

This is one workable plan, not the only plan. The GTO wants a split group, life before duty, and no invented resources. Compare after you write.

Priority of problems

  1. 1. Life — AMS / ataxia in the Tempo; start descent (T).
  2. 2. Property / fire risk — diesel leak toward the exhaust (T).
  3. 3. Duty — warn the Army column about the smashed culvert (CU).
  4. 4. Duty — clear the Tempo off the crown so you do not block the column (AR).

Distance and time (from the map)

  • Tempo → pass crest: 3 km kaccha — do not take the casualty up.
  • Crest → culvert: 2 km kaccha.
  • Culvert → Army RV: 4 km pucca.
  • Culvert → dispensary: 6 km pucca (descent).

What the group actually does

  1. Engine off at once. Party A (2) sand the drip, move jerry cans away from the exhaust.
  2. Party B (3) O2 + sleeping bags, start controlled descent toward the dispensary as soon as the leak is safe. Do not wait for a perfect road.
  3. Satphone: one short call — AMS plus culvert grid to BRO / Army RV. Then off.
  4. Party C (2) walk to the culvert with a warning triangle / person to flag the column, then clear the Tempo off the crown.
  5. Nobody climbs to the crest with the casualty for “better signal”.

Close: Engine off, leak killed, casualty goes down-valley. One satphone call. Column is warned. You are not a roadblock at 11:00.
