CDS vs CAPF-AC — Armed Forces Officer vs Paramilitary: Which Path Fits You?

CDS vs CAPF comparison illustration — CDS graduate officer candidate at IMA gates versus CAPF Assistant Commandant aspirant at paramilitary academy with BSF/CRPF insignia.

Both CDS and CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces) Assistant Commandant are UPSC-conducted officer entries — but they lead to fundamentally different organisations. CDS commissions you into the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force. CAPF-AC commissions you into BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP or SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal). This comparison covers eligibility, exam, training, role, pay and lifestyle so you can pick the service that matches your temperament and goals.

Role and lifestyle — the core difference

A CDS officer leads troops in conventional military operations, exercises and UN missions. A CAPF Assistant Commandant leads companies in border outposts, anti-Naxal areas, riot control and industrial security. CAPF postings are often in remote border or disturbed areas with long tenures; Armed Forces postings rotate through peace and field stations with a stronger regimental culture.

Exam and selection — CDS is longer but more structured

CDS requires clearing the written, then a 5-day SSB, then medical. CAPF requires written + PET/PST + single-day interview. CAPF has no TAT/WAT/SRT — preparation is DAF-centric and current-affairs heavy on internal security.

Can you switch later?

Limited inter-service transfers exist (e.g. deputation), but CDS and CAPF are separate career streams. Choose based on whether you want a war-fighting military career or a paramilitary internal-security career — not on which exam feels easier this year.

Frequently asked questions

Which pays more — CDS or CAPF?

Starting basic pay is similar (Level 10). Allowances differ by posting — field, hardship and flying pay in the Armed Forces vs border/danger allowances in CAPF. Long-term pension and canteen benefits are comparable for gazetted officers.

Is CAPF easier to clear than CDS?

CAPF written is different (not easier). There is no 5-day SSB, but PET/PST eliminates many candidates before the interview. CAPF competition per vacancy is often higher in popular forces like BSF and CRPF.

Can girls apply for both?

Yes — both entries admit women subject to notification vacancies. Check the latest UPSC notification for force-wise female vacancies in CAPF.

Verdict

Choose CDS if your goal is the Indian Army, Navy or Air Force — war fighting, regimental life and a military career. Choose CAPF-AC if you want a gazetted paramilitary career in border guarding or internal security with a shorter selection process. Do not treat CAPF as a "backup" for CDS — the job is different and the satisfaction profile is different.
