INET vs CDS — Navy Officer Entry Compared (2026)

INET vs CDS Navy comparison illustration — Indian Navy INET graduate entry path versus UPSC CDS-INA route toward Indian Naval Academy Ezhimala.

Indian Navy officer aspirants after graduation typically choose between INET (Indian Navy Entrance Test, conducted by the Navy) and CDS (Combined Defence Services, UPSC route to the Indian Naval Academy at Ezhimala). Both require the 5-day SSB at Naval Selection Boards (NSB), but the written exam, branch options, commission type and vacancy pattern differ. This comparison helps you pick the route that matches your degree, age and career horizon.

Branch flexibility favours INET

INET notifications typically span Executive, Technical, Education and Logistics branches in one cycle. CDS-INA is narrower — mainly general service / executive pipeline. If you want technical or education branches, INET is usually the primary route.

Permanent Commission — check the notification

CDS-INA is Permanent Commission. INET offers both PC and SSC depending on branch and cycle. Always read the fine print on the official Indian Navy careers portal before locking your preference in the PI.

Written exam strategy

INET is MCQ-heavy with a dedicated reasoning section — closer to AFCAT in feel. CDS GK and English are tougher but Elementary Maths is manageable for engineers. Many aspirants sit both exams in the same year to maximise chances.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Navy SSB different for INET and CDS?

Same NSB centres, same tasks. Assessors know your entry scheme but evaluate the same 15 OLQs. Service-specific questions appear in the Personal Interview.

Can girls apply through INET and CDS?

Yes — subject to branch vacancies in the current notification. Verify the official advertisement each cycle.

Which has more vacancies — INET or CDS?

INET typically advertises more branch-wise vacancies per cycle. CDS-INA seats can be very limited some years. Apply to both if eligible.

Verdict

For Navy Permanent Commission with an engineering degree, attempt CDS-INA when vacancies exist. For broader branch choice (Technical, Education, Logistics) or if CDS-INA seats are thin, INET is your workhorse entry. Prep the same NSB SSB either way — screening PPDT, psychology battery and GTO tasks.
