NDA is aimed squarely at 16-to-19 year-olds still in Class 11–12. CDS opens up only after graduation. That five-year gap is the single biggest difference: NDA candidates commit to a defence career while still in school; CDS candidates convert to defence after a full college education and typically some professional experience.

Training length and where you end up

NDA gives you four years of academy training (3 years at Khadakwasla + 1 year at the service academy). CDS candidates go through 18 months at IMA (Army), AFA (Air Force), INA (Navy) or OTA (Short Service for Army).
