Permanent Commission vs Short Service Commission — What Changes for Your Career?

Permanent Commission vs Short Service Commission comparison illustration — long-career PC officer parade versus SSC officer with 10–14 year service timeline in Indian Armed Forces.

Every Indian Armed Forces aspirant eventually faces this question: Permanent Commission (serve till retirement age) or Short Service Commission (initial tenure of 10–14 years, with optional extension or PC conversion)? PC entries include NDA, CDS-IMA/AFA/INA, TES and most technical entries. SSC entries include CDS-OTA, SSC(Tech), NCC Special Entry and many AFCAT Ground Duty branches. This page compares what actually changes in your career — not just the notification footnote.

Is SSC a "lesser" commission?

No — SSC officers wear the same uniform, draw the same pay while in service and lead the same troops. The difference is tenure and long-term pension. Many SSC officers serve with distinction and convert to PC or exit into strong second careers at 32–35 with leadership experience corporates value.

PC conversion — what actually happens

SSC officers can apply for PC conversion based on service record, medical fitness and vacancy availability — typically reviewed around the 10-year mark. Conversion is not automatic; merit and requirement matter. Treat SSC as a real commitment, not a placeholder.

Which should you choose at CDS?

If you are unmarried, under 24 and want a full military career, aim for IMA (PC). If you are married, want to test military life for 10 years, or missed IMA age, OTA SSC is a legitimate path — not a consolation prize.

Frequently asked questions

Can SSC officers become Permanent Commission officers?

Yes — subject to merit, medical fitness, force requirement and a selection board. Policies evolve; check the latest MoD circular on SSC-to-PC conversion.

Is SSB different for PC and SSC candidates?

The tasks are identical. The IO may ask why you chose SSC over PC (or vice versa). Have a honest, forward-looking answer — not "SSC is easier to clear".

Do SSC officers get the same salary as PC officers?

Yes — identical pay and allowances while in service. The difference emerges at exit — pension, ESM long-term benefits and post-retirement rank ceiling.

Verdict

Choose Permanent Commission if you want a full-service career till superannuation and can meet the stricter entry filters (age, marital status, branch). Choose Short Service Commission if you want military leadership experience for 10–14 years with flexibility to convert or exit early. Never choose SSC only because you think SSB is easier — assessors will probe your motivation.
