SSB Interview vs CAPF Interview — Format, Duration and What Assessors Look For
Both SSB (for the Indian Armed Forces) and the CAPF (Central Armed Police Forces) Assistant Commandant interview are officer-selection interviews. But the two are wildly different in format, duration, tests and objective. SSB is a 5-day battery evaluating 15 Officer Like Qualities. CAPF-AC is a single-day 45-minute personality test. Aspirants who attempt both need to understand that preparation strategies do not translate one-for-one.
SSB (Armed Forces) vs CAPF-AC Interview — at a glance
| Attribute | SSB (Armed Forces) | CAPF-AC Interview |
|---|---|---|
| For which service | Army, Navy, Air Force officer entry | BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB (Sashastra Seema Bal) — CAPF Assistant Commandant |
| Conducted by | MoD Services Selection Boards (12 centres) | UPSC |
| Duration | 5 days (Day 1 screening → Day 5 conference) | Single day — 30–45 minute interview |
| Number of assessors | 3 primary — IO (Interviewing Officer), GTO, Psychologist | 1 board of 4–5 members |
| Written tests before | None; SSB is post-written | CAPF-AC Written Exam (UPSC) + PET/PST |
| Psychology tests | TAT, WAT, SRT, SD — 11+60+60+5 responses | None |
| Group testing | 9 GTO tasks over 2 days | None |
| Physical testing | 10 Individual Obstacles + Snake Race | PET/PST separately: 100m, LJ, HJ, Shot Put etc. |
| Personal Interview | ~1 hour with the IO on Day 2 or 3 | 30–45 minute panel interview |
| What is scored | 15 OLQs across 3 assessors, then reconciled at Conference | Personality, awareness, motivation, mental alertness |
| Result day | Same day — Conference decides recommend / not | Later — UPSC declares final list after marking |
| Approx. selection rate | ~4–8% of those who attend SSB | ~10–15% of those who attend the interview |
The fundamental purpose is different
SSB screens for the 15 OLQs required in a battle-command role — Effective Intelligence, Speed of Decision, Ability to Influence, Courage, etc. — and does so through triangulation across a psychologist, GTO and IO over 5 days. CAPF-AC is a personality interview for an internal-security command role — the assessor is checking motivation, awareness, mental alertness and clarity of thought in a single sitting.
The SSB triangulation model
The signature feature of SSB is that three independent assessors (Psychologist, GTO, IO) rate you separately across the same 15 OLQs. They only compare notes at the Conference on Day 5. A candidate is recommended only when the three ratings broadly agree. This is why "just preparing for the interview" fails at SSB — the psychologist and GTO have already formed a view before the IO meets you.
The CAPF-AC interview — one panel, one shot
CAPF-AC is a single panel interview of about 30–45 minutes. Typical panel: a Chairman, a Psychologist, and a subject-matter expert. Questions range widely — DAF (Detailed Application Form), current affairs (esp. internal security, Naxalism, border management), personal background, hobbies, technical questions on your degree, and hypothetical situations. There is no group activity, no physical task (PET/PST is separate), no psychology test.
Prep strategy — SSB vs CAPF
The two prep tracks share less than you might think:
- SSB — Practise TAT, WAT, SRT, PPDT, SD; drill GTO tasks (GD, GPE, PGT, Command Task, Lecturette); rehearse the PI around your PIQ.
- CAPF-AC — Master your DAF end-to-end; deep-read current affairs (esp. internal security); prep a 5-minute self-intro; rehearse hypothetical situations aloud.
- Overlap — Both reward honesty, current affairs awareness, and clarity of thought. Both punish rehearsed / fake answers.
- Different — SSB rewards physical fitness in real time; CAPF-AC judges fitness separately in PET/PST.
Attempt limits and cross-application
SSB attempts are unlimited for TES/AFCAT/NDA-CDS (subject to age). CAPF-AC allows the same UPSC attempts as CSE (6 general, more for reserved categories). Many aspirants clear the CAPF-AC written but not the SSB written, or vice versa — the two exam styles are quite different despite both leading to officer roles.
Frequently asked questions
If I have cleared SSB, will CAPF-AC interview feel easy?
The interview environment feels less intense — CAPF-AC is a single 45-minute panel, not a 5-day process. But CAPF-AC panels probe DAF, current affairs and internal security in much greater technical depth than the SSB IO typically does. Do not assume overlap.
Is the CAPF-AC interview conducted at SSB centres?
No. CAPF-AC interviews are conducted at UPSC, Dholpur House, New Delhi. SSB interviews are conducted at the 12 Services Selection Boards across India.
Which is harder — SSB or CAPF-AC interview?
By recommendation rate, SSB is harder (~4–8% vs ~10–15% for CAPF-AC interview). By content depth per assessor, CAPF-AC is harder — the panel questions your DAF and current affairs in significantly more detail than SSB's IO typically does.
Can I use the same PIQ / DAF for both?
No. SSB uses the PIQ (Personal Information Questionnaire) — a 2-page form filled on Day 1. CAPF-AC uses DAF (Detailed Application Form) — a much more elaborate form filled at UPSC application stage. Both should be totally consistent with each other and with your reality, but the questions differ.
Verdict
Do not carry SSB prep techniques wholesale into a CAPF-AC panel. SSB rewards psychology-signal consistency across TAT/WAT/SRT and OLQ visibility across GTO tasks. CAPF-AC rewards deep DAF mastery, current affairs (especially internal security) and clear articulation in a single sitting. Prep both if you have applied to both — but treat them as two distinct interviews with two distinct scoring rubrics.
Other comparisons
NDA vs CDS
Eligibility, training length, service branches and pay — a clear side-by-side of the two most popular Indian Armed Forces entries.
TAT vs PPDT
Both are picture tests, but PPDT screens you in and TAT scores your imagination. Format, timing, marking and preparation compared.
AFCAT vs CDS
Both routes lead to the Indian Air Force — but the exam, branches, permanency and prep effort differ sharply. A clean side-by-side.
